God Is Our Refuge
From 2001-2003, I was Composer-in-Residence for the Cathedral Center for the Arts housed at the beautiful Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. In the spring of 2003, tragedy struck when the cathedral was gutted by a terrible fire. The structure itself was still sound, but the interior of the church was destroyed including the brand-new pipe organ. The community and city rallied together around the cathedral, and the church emerged stronger than before. I was honored to write this piece for the rededication of the organ in the fall of 2005, and the Dean of the Cathedral, Rebecca McClain, agreed with me that Psalm 46 was the perfect choice of words. …Therefore we will not fear, though the earth be moved, Though its waters rage and foam, The Lord of Hosts is with us. |
